Most Australian natives have evolved under intense sunlight and actually perform better in open positions. Their leaf structures, growth habits, and flowering patterns are all optimised for maximum light — shade often produces leggy, sparse growth in these species.
Full sun plants may need more water during establishment (first 1–2 years), but most Australian natives become very drought-tolerant once their root systems develop. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and keeps roots cool during extreme heat.
