Australian native plants have adapted to survive long periods without rain. Many have deep root systems, waxy or narrow leaves that reduce water loss, and the ability to go dormant during extreme drought. Once established, they rarely need supplemental irrigation.

Even drought-hardy plants need regular watering for the first 1–2 years while their root systems develop. Water deeply 2–3 times per week during this period, then gradually reduce. Mulching around the base helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
