Plants that thrive where others struggle. These shade-tolerant natives are perfect for under trees, south-facing gardens, covered patios, and those tricky low-light spots.

Many Australian natives evolved in the understorey of eucalypt forests, making them naturally adapted to filtered light and root competition. Species like Dianella, Viola hederacea, and Blechnum ferns thrive in conditions that would stress most exotics.
Shade gardens need well-prepared soil with added organic matter to compensate for root competition from nearby trees. Water more frequently in dry weather — tree canopies intercept a surprising amount of rain before it reaches the ground.

Shade-loving plants are ideal for the trickiest spots in any garden. Australian natives that handle shade include Dianella, Lomandra (some varieties), Viola hederacea, and most ferns.
Many shade plants also tolerate moist conditions, making them perfect for poorly drained areas alongside water features and drainage swales.
