Many Australian natives are surprisingly frost tolerant, having adapted to cold nights in alpine and tablelands regions. Species from the Blue Mountains, Victorian Alps, and Tasmanian highlands handle heavy frosts without flinching.
Choose frost-hardy species suited to your climate zone. Mulch around roots to insulate soil, avoid pruning in autumn (new growth is frost-sensitive), and water in the morning so foliage dries before nightfall. Young plants benefit from frost cloth during their first winter.
Many Australian natives handle frost well, including Grevillea, Banksia, Correa, Westringia, and Lomandra. Highland species from the Blue Mountains, Victorian Alps, and Tasmanian regions are naturally frost-adapted.
Start with tube stock in spring for best establishment before the following winter. This gives roots a full growing season to develop before facing frost.
